Diversity and Inclusion in Digital Communities

Abstract

Computing technologies are frequently offered as a means of increasing diversity and inclusion. The news, on the other hand, is full with tales of digital systems that have gone tragically wrong in ways that have the opposite impact. Some characteristics of digital technology, such as its massive size, automated procedures, and data-driven judgments, might theoretically increase access to resources and promote more equitable treatment. However, these same characteristics run the risk of giving the appearance of impartiality while encoding inequity and injustice on a large scale - or being utilized to further oppress disadvantaged populations. While digital technologies have the ability to increase diversity and inclusion, that power is derived from their designers, not from the technology itself. Current digital is incapable of abstract reasoning or predicting the effects of substantial change, necessitating the creation of human designers who comprehend why a current system may be bad - and how digital might fix it. Similarly, the detrimental effects of digital on diversity and inclusion are caused not only by flaws with data and algorithm design, but also by their authors misreading and oversimplifying social systems - and failing to anticipate unintended repercussions. The influence of digital systems on diversity and inclusion should be considered in the design and evaluation of all digital tools, as well as their regulation and control. Furthermore, subject matter specialists are required to comprehend the context in which the digital technology will be deployed. Perhaps the most pressing need is for digital development teams to become more diverse, which may be accomplished through improvements in access to education and resources, recruiting procedures, and corporate cultures. There are several examples of flawed digital systems that reflect the authors' world views and assumptions. While diverse teams are not a panacea, they do lessen the likelihood that the benefits of diversity and inclusion will be neglected. Diverse digital talent also broadens the innovation environment more broadly, allowing technology to advance on all fronts.
